Curt Schroeder
Curt Schroeder from Des Moines, Iowa just finished his second year in the
Late Model division. The 25 year has raced at several tracks in the Iowa area
and now talks about that and his 2005 plans with Jody Shannon.
Jody Shannon: How would you rate your 2004 season as a whole?
Curt Schroeder: My 2004 season wasn't what I had hoped for, but we did
learn a lot and that is a good thing. We entered the season wanting to
compete for a top 5 in points at West Liberty, but do to the high fuel prices we
had to re-evaluate and race closer to home in Des Moines. We ended up
blowing our only engine a little over half way thru the season, so we ended the
season early. We learned a lot about the track in Des Moines and the tires
(AR EC-2's) and I look forward to racing there and being competitive in 2004.
JS: What memory from this racing season would you say sticks out for you the
most?
CS: The first race of the season was memorable. It was a very hectic day.
Our engine wasn't complete and off the Dyno until 10:30 AM. We had to pick
it up, put in, and then drive 2.5 hours to West Liberty. To top that off our
carb was junk, so we had to borrow one from my uncle. So the first time we
fired up the engine was 6 minutes before the heat race and we ended up
placing 6th in the feature.
JS: Whom are you looking at as contenders for the 2005 season in the Iowa
area tracks that you race at?
CS: With the IMCA Spec engine rules it keeps everyone fairly close in
horsepower, so if you can get your setup down anyone can be competitive. I
look for Todd Cooney to be the man to beat in Des Moines, he seems to have
that track mastered. In the Deery Series I look for Rob Toland, the 2004
champion, to be strong once again. Overall everyone in our class has a
chance to win on any night.
JS: What is something/things outside of racing that people do not know about
you or would find interesting?
CS: When I was in college I played Division I college football for Iowa
State University (I was a Linebacker). I was on the team all 5 years and
played extensively during my last 2 years. I played in a bowl game against
Pittsburgh and one against Alabama. Most people who know me know this,
but it is pretty interesting. I wouldn't trade my time playing football for
anything.
JS: What is your plans for the upcoming season and this time next year,
what would you have liked to achieve over the course of the 2005 season?
CS. My plans for 2005 depend on if I have an engine ready for the start of
the season. If the engine is ready then I plan on running for IMCA Late
Model National Points Rookie of the Year. If the engine is not ready then I
will probably just race random tracks and specials here in Iowa and maybe
some outside of the state.
